Hampton Court Palace
Remarkable Creatures
Tracy Chevalier
Date: 27 September; doors open at 18.30 for 18.45 start
Price: £20 including refreshments
A truly accomplished writer who enthralled us with ‘Girl with the pearl earring’; I am delighted to be welcoming Tracy Chevalier as a guest speaker at Hampton Court Palace. Tracy’s new book ‘Remarkable Creatures’ is a story of a young fossil hunter who is trying to fight against the strict laws of society in which the main character, Mary Anning, is born into obscurity and poverty. The
story incorporates the message (and character) of Jane Austen and her belief that women are as likely to succeed as men given the opportunity. It is a superb piece of writing which celebrates the life and work of Darwin as well as breaking down the class fissures of the time.
