Standing up to the King

Henry VIII's Chancellor, Sir Thomas More was imprisoned for refusing to accept the king as Head of the Church. He was initially treated relatively well and dedicated himself to contemplation and writing.

He was beheaded and later made a Catholic saint.

His body is buried behind the walls of the crypt of St Peter Ad Vincula.
