Building historical understanding

Free CPD for Primary teachers

About this CPD session

Suitable for primary teachers and history coordinators wishing to find out more about how to create inspiring learning experiences for pupils and how heritage sites can support and enrich their curriculum.

At over one thousand years old, the Tower is a rich source of stories. This event will provide guidance for teachers on how to approach such a vast subject, and how to pare the study of history back to a meaningful and relatable starting point and work outwards from there.

Guest speaker Jamie Byrom, history education consultant and author, will share his views on teaching progression in history using the children’s book ‘Peepo’ as an example.

Teachers will also have the opportunity take part in a tour of the site led by costumed interpreters and participate in a session focussed on learning through objects.

Session objectives:

  • Learn how to access teaching in a heritage setting
  • Experience a visit to a site from the perspective of their pupils
  • Receive practical tools, advice and inspiration for planning and leading self-guided visits
  • Find out how to use historical objects to inspire learning
  • Enjoy the opportunity to network with colleagues.
