This garden was a paddock and then the personal vegetable garden of the Superintendent of the Palace Gardens. In 1974 it became an area for Hampton Court Palace garden apprentices to learn and practice their skills, whilst attending college for one day each week.
The Apprentice Foreman was a keen plantsman and very knowledgeable about trees so the apprentices were thoroughly grounded in the planting of rare and unusual species of trees and shrubs, which would have been out of place among the formal symmetries of the East and South Fronts.
