An event usually reserved for VIP guests! We invite you to join us on Saturday 17 June for this iconic royal tradition.
At precisely 12:00 the 206 (Ulster) Battery, Royal Artillery known as the Ulster Gunners Royal Irish Brigade will fire a 21-round gun salute in honour of HM Queen Elizabeth II, became the longest-reigning British Monarch on 9 September 2015 when she surpassed the reign of her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria. What a wonderful excuse (as if you need one) to get out and enjoy summer in the gardens at Hillsborough Castle.
Guests are asked to gather at the South Terrace for a safety briefing at 11:30 prior to the gun salute at 12:00. Ear plugs will be provided.
Why not make a day of it? Bring along a picnic and enjoy a leisurely lunch within the beautiful gardens and explore the meandering waterways and woodland which make up this stunning 96 acre site.
Alternatively, book a Guided Castle Tour ticket and you'll enjoy full access to the gardens and the Gun Salute, plus the added benefit of a guided tour of this intriguing royal residence with one of our expert guides. Let us welcome you as honoured guests as you experience the stories of the Castle and explore its elegant State Rooms.
The traditional gun salute stems from a naval tradition, where a warship would fire its cannons harmlessly out to sea, until all ammunition was spent. This was to show that it was disarmed, signifying the lack of hostile intent.
A new play, written for Hampton Court Palace by Sarah Dickenson and directed by Jo McInnes.
