Historic Royal Palaces is delighted to announce that Robert Swannell CBE has been appointed a Trustee of the charity following his selection as Chairman of its Campaign Board, succeeding Bruce Carnegie-Brown in this important fundraising role. Robert will serve an initial three-year term from 18 September 2019.

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that cares for six royal sites across London and Northern Ireland, including the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace and Hillsborough Castle. As Chairman of the Campaign Board, Robert will lead Historic Royal Palaces’ next fundraising campaign, galvanising supporters around the charity’s ambitious conservation and capital projects.

Robert takes over from Bruce Carnegie-Brown, who is stepping down after six years, having successfully completed a five-year fundraising campaign (2013-18) that raised £37 million, through the course of which Historic Royal Palaces transformed Hillsborough Castle into a visitor attraction, restored Kew Pagoda with its 80 magnificence dragons, and created a ‘Magic Garden’ at Hampton Court Palace.

Robert is Chairman of UK Government Investments, which is responsible for corporate finance and corporate governance for HMG. He is also Chairman of the LP Advisory Committee of Ahren, an investment company based on deep, transformational science, a Director of the Investor Forum and a member of The Takeover Panel Appeal Board. Robert is Chairman of The Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation, a Trustee of Teach First and a visiting Fellow at the Oxford University, Said Business School.

Robert was previously Chairman of Marks & Spencer (2010-2017), senior independent director of The British Land Company PLC (1999-2010), of 3i Group PLC (2006-2010) and Chairman of HMV (2009-2011). He was also Chairman and a member of the Governing Body of Rugby School from 2004-2014, a Trustee of Career Ready from 2003-2012, Trustee of the Kew Foundation from 2011-2017 and a member of the Advisory Board of The Sutton Trust from 2014-17.

Until 2010, Robert spent a career of over 30 years in investment banking with Schroders/Citigroup. He was formerly Vice-Chairman of Citi Europe and Chairman of Citi’s European Investment Bank. Robert qualified both as a chartered accountant and a barrister. He was appointed CBE in the 2018 New Years’ Honours for services to Business, Finance and Retail.

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle and Gardens.  We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. We raise all our own funds and depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. With the exception of Hillsborough Castle and Gardens, these palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. Historic Royal Palaces cares for Hillsborough Castle and Gardens under a separate contract with the Northern Ireland Office. Registered charity number 1068852. For more information visit
