Storytelling mayhem unleashed at Hampton Court Palace this summer

Join Bottom and the Mechanicals for three action-packed performances each day at Henry VIII’s famous palace

06 - 21 August 2022

This August, the whole family is invited to Hampton Court Palace for Midsummer Merriments: Tales from Hampton Court Palace. Join Bottom and the Mechanicals for three high-octane performances each day, uncovering unexpected tales from the palace’s past with each spin of the “Wheel of Merriment”.

Perfect for keeping the little ones entertained this summer, Midsummer Merriments is a storytelling extravaganza offering a new perspective on the palace’s rich history. Bottom and the Mechanicals will spin the wheel to decide which tale to tell next, and as it holds more content than the Mechanicals can perform in thirty minutes, each show will be different!

Hampton Court Palace is the original home of a Midsummer Night’s Dream, where the first known public performance of Shakespeare’s famous comedy was performed on 1 January 1604. The team behind Shakespearience!  - a band of mischievous storytellers known for bringing the Bard’s best-loved works to life - will be causing chaos in the East Front Gardens as they share stories from the past. Visitors can expect to be enthralled by hilarious tales from Hampton Court Palace, from an Anne Boleyn singalong, to a Puritan stand-up comedy routine!

Once visitors have experienced the mayhem of Bottom and the Mechanical’s storytelling spectacular, they can head inside to investigate the treasures of Hampton Court Palace for themselves. From exploring Henry VIII’s famous Tudor palace - including the magnificent Great Hall where A Midsummer Night’s Dream is believed to have first been performed - to basking in the splendour of William and Mary’s baroque masterpiece, there’s something to delight history-lovers of all eras.

After exploring the palace, visitors can take in the rest of Hampton Court’s magnificent formal gardens and grounds, including the fun-filled Magic Garden, a magical playground for little ones.

Performances of Midsummer Merriments are included in standard Hampton Court Palace admission tickets, while Historic Royal Palaces members also enjoy free entry. Performances run daily at 11:30, 13:30 and 15:30. On Thursday 11 and Saturday 20 August there will be a BSL interpreter on site to sign all three performances.
