Step back 700 years to the time of King Edward I in one of his many residences, the Tower of London.

Live performers invite you to join them in a world of chivalrous knights and beautiful ladies, troublesome lords and royal prisoners.

Can you advise them wisely, as King Edward I, known as the ‘Hammer of the Scots’, prepares for war?

Join the knights and ladies in the Medieval Palace at any time between 11:00-12:30 and 13:30-15:30.

What's the story behind the performance?

It is the year 1299. England has been at war for much of King Edward I’s reign.

He has conquered the Welsh but warfare in Scotland rages on. The English victory of Falkirk has restored the balance of power in Edward’s favour but William Wallace still remains at large. Imprisoning the Scottish King John Balliol at the Tower has not broken the country’s defiant spirit against the English.

The Tower has been given impressive outer defences, but castle building on this scale is expensive! And now the Royal Mint at the Tower must struggle with a new menace, a flood of bad coins threatening the whole economy.

Help the royal courtiers decide the best ways to assist their King and maintain the governance of the country.

There is hope for peace between England and France, if the widowed king can be persuaded to marry Margaret, sister of the King of France. What will be expected of the new queen and what will it be like to be married to such a warlike husband?
