Join Historic Royal Palaces Chief Curator Lucy Worsley for this extra-special online event exploring LGBT+ histories of the palaces, unearthing tales of power, politics, gender and sexuality throughout British history.

Accompanying Lucy will be Historic Royal Palaces’ LGBT+ histories curator Matthew Storey, who will reveal how the lives and loves of monarchs and courtiers changed the course of royal history, and shaped public attitudes to sexuality for centuries.

While Henry VIII’s reign led to the criminalisation of homosexual acts, same-sex love still flourished at the royal court. Mary II’s letters to Lady Frances Apsley reveal an intense passion, while her sister Queen Anne’s relationships with her favourites were the subject of scandal and slander. Beyond the royal bedchamber, stories of same-sex love, desire, and people who lived beyond the gender binary abound from servants to soldiers and prisoners.

No longer hidden, these stories promise to delight, surprise and inspire in equal measure.

This event is free to join, but we ask you to consider making a donation of £10 or whatever you can afford.

Historic Royal Palaces is a self-funding charity, and the Coronavirus pandemic has had a devastating impact on us. We experienced a £100 million shortfall in our finances over the last year, so if you love the palaces and believe in what we do, we have never needed your support more.

Historic Royal Palaces is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales (Registered Charity No. 1068852).
