Chapel Royal Spring Concert

Classical Connections: Pastoral Mass (Mozart) & Nelson Mass (Haydn)

Classical Connections: Pastoral Mass (Mozart) & Nelson Mass (Haydn)

Experience a special spring concert from the Choir and Orchestra of the Chapel Royal of St. Peter ad Vincula and director Colm Carey in the Tower of London.

Discover music by the giants of the classical era: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Franz Joseph Haydn.

About the spring concert programme

The programme offers two highly contrasting Mass settings.

Mozart’s Missa Pastoralis (Pastoral Mass), written in 1770, was very popular in his own lifetime. Although composed when he was a teenager, the exuberance, joy and humour that characterised his later Mass settings was already clearly evident.

Haydn’s (so called) Nelson Mass could not be more different. Composed in 1798, the original title, Missa in Angustiis - Mass in time of Distress, is a relatable performance relevant to the present day.

The Two Performances

Pastoral Mass

Associated with Christmas, Pastoral Masses take popular songs and folk tunes as their inspiration. This wonderfully individual work captures that essence as well as exhibiting the flamboyant manner and cheerful, energetic personality of Mozart as a young man.

Nelson Mass

Brimming with Haydn’s talent for musical drama, the Nelson Mass carries us through the full human experience, leading us on a sometimes very dark journey that ultimately celebrates human strength and resilience.
