Crafts, sport and leisure

As well as visiting the palace and grounds, there are other activities and organisations based at Hampton Court. Here you can find out about sports like Real Tennis, fishing, and golf, and also arts and crafts activities like needlework, florilegium and the school of design.

Sports facilities


Fishing is permitted in the waters of Hampton Court and Bushy Park but not the River Thames. Applications for permits should be made on an official application form which can be collected in person from the Hampton Court Palace ticket office, by downloading a copy of the form below or you can telephone the Contact Centre on +44 (0)20 3166 6000 to request a copy. Send your completed forms, along with two passport sized photographs and a stamped address envelope, to:

The 2015 cost of a permit is £29.00 per year for an adult, and £15.00 for concessions or children (under 9 years are free when accompanied by an adult with a permit). Prices are per rod, with a maximum of two rods per person.


Hampton Court Palace Golf Club is set in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace near Kingston-upon-Thames in Surrey. It has the enviable accolade of being the only course in the country set within the grounds of a Royal Park. 


Tennis has been played on this site since 1528 when Henry VIII comissioned the first Real Tennis court. Today the tennis club at Hampton Court Palace is a private members' club. An introductory lesson for non-members is available from the Club Professionals.

Arts and crafts

The Royal School of Needlework

The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is the international centre for teaching, practicing and promoting hand embroidery across a wide range of techniques. They offer hand embroidery courses for all levels and welcome students from all over the world. You can also visit the RSN by attending one of their tours (places must be booked in advance) or by visiting the RSN shop.


The Hampton Court Palace Florilegium Society members meet one day per month at the palace to paint, research plant material and enjoy a variety of speakers. Members are able to explore the beautiful gardens and glasshouses and they have the help and co-operation of the Head Gardener and his team in their research of the plants.

KLC School of Design - Garden design courses

KLC School of Design is world renowned for the quality of its training in garden design. Their vocational courses are held in the magnificent surroundings of Hampton Court Palace and are delivered in a professional, friendly and stimulating environment.
