The inaugural Inspiring History Teaching Awards (2026) celebrated exceptional teachers from across the UK who make history exciting, inclusive and meaningful, bringing the past to life and inspiring young people to see the world differently. Created by Historic Royal Palaces and delivered in collaboration with the Historical Association and partner organisations across the UK, the awards shine a spotlight on educators whose passion, creativity and dedication are helping students develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Winners and prizes

Selected from thousands of nominations submitted by pupils, parents and colleagues, ten teachers from across the UK were chosen as the regional and national winners of the inaugural awards. Together, they represent the very best of history teaching, from immersive classroom experiences and digital innovation to community-based learning and the exploration of diverse histories.

Each winner received individual and school cash prizes, membership to Historic Royal Palaces and the Historical Association, and access to a mental health and wellbeing workshop from Education Support. Winners have also been invited to become Historic Royal Palaces Teacher Champions, helping to inspire fellow educators through events, training and professional development opportunities.

Meet the winners

Overall Winner: Elizabeth Carr

At a special awards ceremony held at the Tower of London, Elizabeth Carr was named the overall winner of the inaugural Inspiring History Teaching Awards. Elizabeth, Assistant Principal (Curriculum) and Subject Lead for Humanities at Avanti Grange Secondary School, was recognised for her outstanding contribution to history education and her commitment to helping students engage deeply with the past.

Judges praised her academic rigour and engaging approach to teaching, which brings history to life through storytelling, sensory experiences and the exploration of diverse perspectives. Her lessons encourage students to think critically about the past while broadening their understanding through topics such as the Mali Empire, the Mongol Empire and underrepresented voices from history.
